Gestures - Monday, January 10th

Many societies have varying actions which are considered "social offenses." For instance, many U.S. citizens would say "giving the finger" is always socially offensive. Or is it? Do you think it's always socially offensive to make vulgar gestures? Can you think of a time when it would be acceptable to raise your middle finger at someone?

It would be acceptable to raise your middle finger at someone when like you driving and someone honks their horn at you.

Michael Sustaita,

I think that sometimes its appropriate give the middle finger. When someone is being rude, or in a situation were you could get hurt its appropriate to give someone the finger.

I dont think its right to raise the middle finger at anyone for any reason

I don't think that it is right. Sometimes people slip & get angry and decide to just throw it up there. For instance when some one cuts you off in taffic that's when you might do it. But on a respect level i think its unnessicary.

I think the best situation that i gave someone the middle finger was when they gave it to me first. I don't remember what it was about but i gave it back to him.

I dont think its offensive all the time but usually if the person would give you the middle finger you probably did something to deserve it

Beau
i think that it would be good to do it to people that think they are more in portent than us

Emily
Mason what if they just give you the finger and you didnt deserve it

I don't think that "giving the finger" would be an offence to anyone. There is obviously a reason they are flipping somone off, because someone said something bad about them or did something to them. Some gestures may be inappropriate at sometimes, but most are okay.

Emily what possible reason could someone have to give you the finger for nothing?

Anonymous said...

Emily@Beau
is that really acceptable so if someone just acts like they are more important then you flip them off

Yes and No! So yes Because if someone is blind or death and they need help communitcating you can put up signs and motions like voices to help them out and no because if you put up some kind of sign towards something or someone that someone or something might take it the wrong way and go to far with it.

thanks kerstin! (:
